The Groninger Archieven put together this digital presentation in the context of a local referendum on the future development of the Grote Markt and its north side in particular, on 21 February 2001.
This presentation aims to show what the Grote Markt looked like through the ages. More about this subject is to be found in the following books and publications, which may all be consulted in the reading room of the Groninger Archieven.

• Johan de Boer [et al]: ‘De Waagstraat, het stadshart van Groningen terug naar nu’, Groningen, 1996.

The Groninger Archieven also preserve large numbers of maps, prints and drawings, photos and picture postcards showing the Grote Markt. The emphasis in this digital exhibition is on the north side, the main guardhouse and the town hall; it also includes details from a series of historical maps.
All of this material, and much more, may be examined in the Archives’ reading room.
